2015 Draft Profile - George de Paula

Strengths
De Paula has a rare combination of a big, physical body with long arms and humongous hands at the young age of 19. de Paula has an estimated seven-foot wingspan that allows him to keep his hands in the passing lane and extend over defenders. Defensively, De Paula is a strong defender who can guard multiple positions due to his size and quickness.

Offensively, he is a good ball handler who sees the floor well and is constantly looking to find the open man. Although he may try to do too much at times, de Paula is an aggressive player who is learning to balance when to attack and when to slow down and control the tempo on offense. This is something he will get better at with more experience that he gets playing with better competition.

Weaknesses
Seeing that he is only a 19-year-old, De Paula still has a lot of developing to do before he reaches his true potential as an NBA player. That being said, his perimeter game is a big weakness right now. He struggles to hit jump shots consistently and hesitates to take open shots when available. As a point guard, he has to shoot specifically better off-the-dribble, since a lot of his open shots will come off screen-and-roll action.

While possessing great size and length, De Paula isn't necessarily an explosive athlete. He will have to rely on his big physique to keep up with opposing players defensively, as many point guards in the NBA have tremendous athleticism they use while attacking the rim.

Another glaring weakness De Paula has in his game is his turnover ratio. As a young point guard, we constantly see players trying to do too much with it, something he'll have to cut down over time with experience and learning to handle on-ball pressure better at the next level.
