2016 Draft Profile - Malik Newman

Strengths: Malik Newman is about as pure a scorer as there is in this draft class. He is a great shot creator, capable of spotting up on the perimeter with his deep range, or attacking the basket with no fear.

Newman can literally score from anywhere on the court. He has a very good first step, and solid athleticism as well. This helps him at the rim where he is a great finisher despite his size.

He is also a very good ballhandler and a more than capable passer when he needs to be, but scoring will be his calling card.

Weaknesses: As of right now, Newman is more of a shooting guard than point guard and if that is the case, he is undersized for the position. It doesn’t help that he lacks the weight or wingspan to make up for his lack of height for the position. He will try to prove that he can play the point guard at Mississippi State.

Playing point guard leads to one of his other issues as his decision making can be iffy at times. While he has some of the skills necessary to play the position, he may not have the mental makeup of a true point guard.

Defensively, he is just average. He has solid speed and athleticism, but his lack of strength hurts him against bigger guards.
