2016 Draft Profile - Thon Maker

Strengths: From a physical standpoint, the 19-year-old power forward is a freak of nature standing at 7’0” with incredible versatility and athleticism. He’s a long fluid forward that runs the floor well and can play well on both ends.

Maker has drawn comparisons to a mixture of Kevin Durant and Kevin Garnett (both physically and game-wise) as a strong rebounder that can block shots with his length and athleticism, but also knock down shots that extend beyond the three-point line.

There’s still a lot of raw, undeveloped talent from the Australian product, but Maker’s high motor and upside seem to be appealing to a lot of NBA front offices. Many experts predict Maker to go in the mid to late first round and potentially even spend a year in the NBA’s Developmental League if necessary.

Weaknesses: The upside and potential for Maker is clearly there, especially at 19 years old, but there’s still a lot of holes to fill in his overall game.

First off, he still doesn’t have a strong feel to the game, which is why the D-League may be a possible destination for him in his first season. Maker’s IQ is still a major work in progress, but that’ll improve with the more reps he gets on the court.

Besides having a solid combination of size and length, Maker needs to add a lot of strength as he transitions into the NBA with better and more physical opponents. He also must learn to play within the offense since he has a tendency to play selfish at times.
