Ht/Wt: 5-11 / 180 lbs
Position: PG
Team: Texas
Class: Sophomore

2008 Draft Profile - D.J. Augustin

DJ Augustin is probably one of the most talented yet perplexing enigmas in the college world. Despite possessing an NBA ready game, a hard-working attitude, and plenty of potential, it all comes crashing down when observing his size. 5'11''? Generosity if you ask any NBA scout. Although strong and quick, his lack of height makes his draft selection that much more difficult for a team looking for a guaranteed success story.

Strengths: Is one of those rare guards who knows when and how to pass, yet at the same time shows up to score when it counts. Augustin has a solid outside stroke, and has the quick handling and crossover ability to take it right by almost any defender thrown at him at this level. Is a good free-throw shooter, and gets to the line a lot. Sometimes settles for outside shot, but is excellent at finishing near the rim. Defensively, is capable of being that kind of "pest" defender that coaches long for at the next level. Has quick hands, and forces turnovers, especially when playing well offensively. Is a relatively smart player, and is a star when it counts for Texas.

Weaknesses: Again, first comes size, and then a domino effect of problems. At 5'11'', again a generous measurement, Augustin is not a threat whatsoever when trying to post up other guards, and struggles mightily against taller opponents (Elite 8 game against Derrick Rose, couldn't hit a shot). Is not an explosive athlete, and doesn't always make the best decisions passing. Defensively, is completely useless when being posted up on. Sometimes takes iffy shots, and needs to demonstrate that he can ease up on the shooting hand on bad nights and simply be a role player to his teammates despite his passing ability.

Outlook: Could be a first-round lottery pick if teams see he can improve athletically. Talent wise is one of the best in the draft, but size wise is a complete waste. Needs to prove he can be a role-player, or a floor general that won't be beaten by lack of size. Would fit best with a team like Sacramento/Dallas. Is really effective in a half-court set, where speed and athleticism don't neccessarily beat set plays.

2007 Draft Profile - D.J. Augustin

Shows the right balance between scoring and getting his teammates involved. A quick point guard with excellent court leadership skills, and can make passes few NBA point guards can pull off. Excellent shooter with legit NBA 3-point range. Able to penetrate and get to the free throw line. Still trying to find a midrange game, especially when trying to shoot off the dribble. Has been a little turnover prone this season and needs to be more vocal on the court. His biggest knock is his size he's probably closer to 5-foot-10, than 6 feet.
