Greg Monroe
Ht/Wt: 6-11 / 240 lbs
Position: PF/C
Team: Georgetown
Class: Sophomore

2010 Draft Profile - Greg Monroe

Strengths: Monroe demonstrates a very high basketball IQ, he shows flashes of being able to take over a game down low, he has a solid back to the basket game, very good ball handling for a big man, excellent passing ability, and very good team player. He is a traditonal 4 who is big strong and plays better down low than on the perimeter. Greg also has decent form on his jumper (which gives me hope he could extend his range) and on his foul shot (has to be more consistent with his release point).

Weaknesses: Greg Monroe is passive to a fault. He tends to allow the game to move away from him thus making it hard for me to imagine ever building a team around this extremely talented big man. Needs to demonstrate more aggressiveness in the paint because he allows himself to get a little lackadaisical thus leading to him being pushed around for stretches of the game. Lastly, Monroe has poor footwork both on the perimeter and in the paint; in the paint he demonstrates a poor base which leads to him being caught off balance by a slight bump which can lead to traveling calls; on the perimeter he tends to shuffle his feet prior to putting the ball on the floor. Not NBA ready!

Outlook: The sky is the limit for this very talented big man but in order to be a center piece of an NBA franchise he needs to do two things 1) Stay in school and 2) Become more aggressive. I think he'll be a starter on an NBA roster and play for many years on many teams while in the league, but ultimately be an underachiever.

2009 Draft Profile - Greg Monroe

Monroe has worked himself in to the top 10, potentially the top 5 of the 2009 NBA draft, after solid start to in his freshman year at Georgetown. Has excellent height and length, a 7’2” wingspan. Has an NBA body that runs the floor well. Is strong with his back to the basket, but even better when he’s facing the basket. Monroe has a good jump and hook shot that can be hit from a variety of angles. Good basketball IQ. Excellent ball handling skills for a big man.

Needs to be stronger on the boards, he has the size and ability, but doesn’t always use it. Doesn’t always hustle. Is it a lack of strength or drive that leads to him being pushed around down low? Lost some agility when weight went to around 250. Defensively he tends to get out of position sometimes.
