2010 Draft Profile - Luke Harangody

STRENGTHS: What if I told you about the existence of Larry Bird and Tyler Hansbrough packaged in one big NBA body, tried and tested by top flight Big East competition and now deemed NBA ready? Such a player truly exists in the person of Luke Harangody. At 6'9" and 260 pounds depending on whom you ask is both a banger, shooter and cerebral player that can spot up and stroke it from 20-25 feet and also play inside with his back to the basket and score with an array of crafty moves. Luke is the total package. If you don't believe this profile then maybe you'll take an opportunity to see for yourself soon. Most of his competition has often been taller, more athletic and quicker yet Luke kept ringing the bells. He was the most consistent player Notre Dame has seen over the past decade; if not him then who has been more consistent. He will not eat up a lot of shots and will score off offensive rebounds while also pulling his man which might be a shot blocker outside to guard him thereby leaving the lane open to penetrating guard play. Luke knows how to use his wide body for position down low and has become an adept passer out of double teams and pick and pops. Life is not fair - it also sometimes doesn't make any sense at all. How does Tyler Hansbrough that undeniably played on a better and more talented team wind up as the 17th pick in the1st round of 2009, and Luke projects out to a mid to late 2nd round pick in 2010? Look for Charlie Hustle in shorts to move up the board to a late 1st round pick as reality sets in with scouts.

WEAKNESSES: Luke will definitely have trouble guarding athletic fours in the Association one on one but if he plays with an athletic shot blocking Center that could be an equalizer. Bird was lucky to have the Chief behind him. Will also have to work on foot speed getting up and down the floor and improving his ballhandling ability if he expects to take the Carlos Boozers off the dribble which would free him up to stroke his jumper.

NBA OUTLOOK: Projects out as either a bench player or a starter at the four spot for a team in need of steady yeoman-like play from a big man which would provide unlimited opportunities for a quick backcourt. Think of Luke in the style of a Mehmet Okur for Utah with the ability to also get you 8-10 rebounds pg. Will be great in the locker room, off the court as well as on the court. May have to initially limit his minutes to 20-25 per game dependent upon his conditioning.
