Wayne Chism
Ht/Wt: 6-8 / 240 lbs
Position: PF
Team: Tennessee
Class: Senior

2010 Draft Profile - Wayne Chism

STRENGTHS: Chism has displayed scoring ability throughout his college career though he has never put up high scoring averages. He has a thick frame which allows him to muscle for interior shots with his back to the basket. He has a quick turnaround spin move he uses out to 7/8 feet and has developed the body control to make consistant lay-ups and short push jumpers using the board. Has been used on the peremiter to pull opposing initerior defenders away from the basket and has shown the ability to hit the 21 foot jumper when open. Defensively, Chism has shown very good position defense all the way back through high school. Elite interior scorers have not had many big games against him. He has a solid base that is hard to move and quick feet in the low post to keep players off balance.

WEAKNESSES: Though Chism is thick, he is not overly athletic in the speed or jumping ability categories. Gets most of his blocks from positioning rather than leaping ability. Would not be considered a strong finisher on the break. Has an asthema condition (his teamates call him "Weezie") that has caused him to miss minutes in games, though has not proved to be a serious condition. Has not featured a 15 foot high post shot in the Tennessee offense that one would think should be a strength. Showed poor shot selection from 3 point range early in career which has improved over time, although his shooting percentage from long range has not (32%). Has not shown the ability to take defenders off the dribble. Foul problems have plagued him as his career has advanced.

Outlook: Chism has the same obsticals that many college post players have when translating to the NBA. He is a little short for his position and does not play above the rim. His ability to be an offensive weapon from the perimeter should get him a look from pro scouts, but it will be surprising if he will be classified as a "stretch 4" player that can extend interior defenders while also being a productive rebounder. Shots do develop over time and Chism may be able to find a nitch as a bench player if he can extend his shooting range, improve his handle and ability to get up and down the court. A mid-second round pick at best.
