2010 Draft Profile - Wesley Johnson
Strengths: Absolutely wonderful team player, with a great attitude on the court and in the locker room to go along with marvelous athleticism. Wesley Johnson has been exactly what Doctor Boeheim ordered for a team that effectively lost three pivotal starters from last years team. Two are playing in Europe Flynn of course was a first round pick for the Timberwolves. Watching Johnson up close this year has provided insight into a player that is truly focused on making his teammates better while scoring his points within the flow of the basketball game. He simply refuses to take a bad shot which is unbelievable since he is usually the first or second option in the Cuse offense next to Andy Rautins. He is also very adept with his slight frame at mixing it up inside and grabbing crucial rebounds while also making key blocks if opponents penetrate the stifling 2-3 zone that Syracuse has perfected. Johnson has a money jumper that he can take in rhythm or spot up for anywhere on the court. He is an excellent finisher with big hops and because you have to respect the J - it provides him an opportunity to take players off the dribble.Weaknesses :Sometimes Johnson can be unselfish to a fault. With his extraordinary talent he shouldn't have to defer to another teammate. Needs to work on his handle for the next level; especially if he is going to be a component in a run and gun up tempo offense as the NBA Western Conference is known for. Iverson and Richard Hamilton have made a decent living with slight body frames in the NBA but at 6'7" Johnson should be able to effectively add 25 pounds to his thin frame over the next two years. Last, if Johnson is to become an effective two guard as opposed to a small forward he'll have to focus on shoring up his defensive skills since he won't be able to depend on 2-3 zones in the Association.
NBA Outlook :Will initially find time on the floor as a small forward since that would give him the matchup advantage. Could become an impact player with the right team because he is so multi-talented and thinks the game as much as performing during the game. Johnson will definitely become a double-double threat because his motor doesn't stop. His teammates will love playing with him for the next 10-12 years.
