2011 Draft Profile - Bismack Biyombo

Biyombo is a physical specimen whose stock is rising as much as anyone. At 6ft 9 and a chiseled 240lbs he comes with great size and extraordinary length (7ft7in wingspan), not too mention he doesn’t turn 19 until late August you have a very unique profile that has scouts drooling. These attributes lead you to assume that he can go matchup with NBA bigs right now and challenge them. To go with his physical dimensions he also has a great deal of athletic prowess, Bismack has great upper and lower body strength, explosive in the painted area and shows great timing on shot blocking. Still new to the game, he plays in what many believe the 2nd most competitive league in the world behind the NBA and leads the league in blocks and among the leaders in rebounds. Bismack solidified his reputation as a defensive and rebounding ace at the Nike hoops summit in Portland and earned comparisons to a young Ben Wallace. Biyombo adds a tenacity and effort that is 2nd to none. If you were to draw up a dominant defensive prospect than here it is. On offense he is a great finisher even through contact because of his strength, and despite not getting a lot of plays run for him he is a league leader in free throw attempts. He should also be adept at running the floor and finishing in transition.

Negatives are speculation about his age being a few years older than he claims. Biyumbo is extremely raw on offense, a guy that you don’t want the ball in his hands unless he is attacking the basket or passing it. Below average FT shooter, unaccomplished post game because of how turnover prone he is, players with his profile almost never develop a mid range game. He sees the game well on defense but on offense he is almost a fish out of water in half court sets, he will be limited to setting screens rolling to the basket and crashing boards. Doesn’t have great hands. Coming from Congo there could be concerns on how he adapts to the NBA lifestyle. Perhaps too emotional at times.

This is a player that needs to have a plan when you draft him. Still has a lot to learn on the offensive end, but his defensive transition and contributing as a rebounder should come right away. There are many teenage international prospects that bust, but I think if you nurture this guy properly on and off the court, than making All NBA Defensive teams should be inevitable.

NBA comparison- Ben Wallace
