2011 Draft Profile - JaJuan Johnson

I like this guy a lot and don’t see why he isn’t a higher rated prospect. Reminds me of Marcus Camby, Johnson has showed steady improvement 4 years and has been a dominant rebounder and shot blocker in the Big 10. He runs the floor well, active on the offensive glass and makes it difficult on the defensive end for teams to finish at the basket. Has a good skill set for shot blocking at 6ft 10 he has long arms, good timing and positioning. His awareness and team D led to steals as well as blocks and was a key to Purdue’s success. Has a decent touch down low, his range goes out to close to 15 ft, and was over 80% from the FT line as a senior. Johnson is unselfish, with his experience he comes in nearly a finished product, should contribute immediately. Jajuan brings the experience of finding the winners circle as a key player in a tough conference. He has good length, mobility and hands for a C.

At 6ft10 225lbs Johnson is very thin for being a front line guy in the NBA. He needs to work on adding bulk, but like Camby he may have difficulty on his long frame. Like Camby early in his career it playing at a thin weight may lead to nagging injuries early on as he adjusts. By his sr yr Johnson developed as a go to scorer, but in the NBA he may have difficulty finishing through contact. Unless he adds considerable strength or a consistent jumper you will not run plays for him and his offense will be limited to put backs and running the floor.

If he only had the ideal bulk Johnson would be a guy everyone would want. A defensive and rebound minded big that can run the floor. If he gets to about 250lbs he should be a starting C in the league. If he cant add the weight, he will need to find a way to stay healthy and battle through the physical toll going against NBA bigs. With his presence, mobility and conditioning he could have a solid career as a role player with unique longevity for his position.
