2011 Draft Profile - Jimmer Fredette

The nations leading scorer is a pure scoring maniac who sticks it to opponents from anywhere on the court. A very crafty and intelligent player that has the ability to hang 40 on any given night. He doesn't have great athletic ability but makes up for it with a sheer desire to win and great scoring instincts. Jimmer has a very strong looking physique that withstands contact when he is in attack mode. He reminds many evaluators of Mark Price, but I think he is a cross between Steve Nash and a shorter JJ Redick for the way he uses ball screens, fades, curls and reading the defense for open looks. He also has very underrated court vision that goes unotice because he is known for racking up points. I am not really sure if he is NBA starter material, but can give many teams quality minutes with his scoring flurries.

As we all know Jimmer has unlimited range with his jump shot. He does an excellent job at getting his feet set and shoulders square before his release, off the dribble and off screens. He also has great elevation for his size, making almost impossible for defenders to block his jumper. He can do more than just shoot though. He showed he can score in a variety ways, driving to the hoop and coming off screens. I believe Fredette is a better ball handler than people give him credit for. Being the primary ball handler does sometimes make him turnover prone though. Fredette is also great at getting to the foul line, and converting when he gets there. He also has great court vision, being able to find his teammates when double teamed. He does a good job keeping his dribble when he is trapped until he finds an open man. Most players would panic in that situation, picking up their dribble and eventually making a bad pass. His ability to shoot and court vision make him a dangerous pick and roll player as well. Fredette also has great intangibles. He embraces playing on the road, and is a great emotional leader on the floor.

There are some concerns about his game translating to the NBA. At 6'2 he isn't tall enough to guard shooting guards in the league, and I am not sure he is quick enough to guard elite point guards. He's the type of defender coaches are going to have to try to hide in their team defense. Offensively, he has some trouble with lengthy athletes. Kawhi Leonard's length did force Fredette to take some tough shots in their two matchups this year. Jimmer sometimes tends to over dribble, putting himself in tough situations. He does take a lot of shots, but that comes from the freedom his coach gives him. He won't have that type of green light in the NBA and will have to learn to play more controlled.

I believe with his shooting ability and above average ball handling, Jimmer Fredette can become an effective player in the NBA. If he reaches his full potential, I see him being a Mark Price/Steve Kerr type of player.

Lights out shooter with deadly range pulling up to shoot or off screens it doesn’t matter he can knock them down. Scores in bunches from all over the court. Good upper body strength, great competitor, high IQ, not afraid to take the big shots. Good ball handler and passer. Works hard and great at what he does, which is shoot the ball.

Lacks foot speed of NBA guards and overall athleticism. Thought of as a defensive liability at the next level. He makes scoop shots in the paint similar to Tony Parker and Steve Nash but lacks their foot speed to get to spots on the floor. A team will love his shooting and scoring ability but will have to work to cover up his weaknesses.
