2011 Draft Profile - Josh Selby

Mr. Showtime Selby is what they call him, I call him Houdini for his disappearing acts he has given KU during freshman season. Make no mistake about it though, Selby is a tremendous talent and has NBA written all over him, but is playing well one game and the next, he is no where to be found. Although he just makes you sit on the edgeof your seat while watching him because of the flair for dramatics he shows. He has a solid mid range jumper off the bounce that he specialize using over defenders because of high elevation and elite athleticism. Selby is a good but not great shooter out to the arc but seems to have the confidence and work ethic to maximize range. He reminds me of scoring sensation, Dajuan Wagner, the way he scores so easily from different angles. If he goes pro early, it might take him a minute to adjust, but wants the game slows down, watch out, he is to talented not to be a factor at some point in career. He is more of a combo guard rather than pure lead guard and can have a Ben Gordon affect if landing in the right system.

Selby being considered in the 1st round of the draft comes solely based on his reputation. At his only season at KU Selby never found rhythm or given the freedom he needs to excel. Josh has an ultra talented one on one game fit for the NBA. He has an explosive first step, great acceleration, can stop and go and good upper body strength. Selby’s game is all about getting by his man into the painted area and finishing. He can take contact, hang in the air while completing a difficult shot, he can pull up from all angles, or if a defense is not paying enough attention he will embarrass you with dunks. Selby has the mentality to attack the rim and the athleticism to do that well. In man defense he can get a shot off at will. His energy comes from scoring in bunches, once he gets a couple buckets going to the rim his confidence grows, the defense sags off to defend the drive and he starts making deep shots and becomes un-guardable. When too many defenders collapse on Selby he will make the flashy assist. He is also a good on ball defender. Josh is a guy that looks to make big plays and take over games and has the confidence to do so.

Selby is a pure lead guard who needs offensive freedom to play his game. A little short to develop as a sg, and isn’t as comfortable playing away from the ball. He showed in his 1 year at KU that he is not a natural distributor or guy that contributes in the flow of the game. He needs offense run through him. I worry that if things are not going his way offensively that his defensive concentration will also suffer. While he was in high school many predicted Selby would be an unstoppable scorer in the NBA sooner rather than later. It is a bit concerning that he could be rushing to the NBA rather than staying a yr and be the go to guy to raise his draft stock to where it should be and where many thought he could go this year which is a top 5 pick. Although he has a NBA game with a dominant one on one arsenal, he also appears to have a lack of patience and high opinion of talents and may not mesh well on a NBA roster.

As a pure lead guard he compares favorably to guys that have become stars in the league, as well as guys who have fizzled out or have had difficulty finding a niche. Allen Iverson, Steve Francis, Dajuan Wagner, Jerryd Bayless, Oj Mayo are a few that have similar games and Selby is as talented as all of them. His work ethic, humility, perseverance, are all going to play a big part of how he develops since he will probably not get the freedom he wants right away. Selby could be the steal of the draft. Superstar potential here and will probably go no earlier than middle of 1st rd. If a team tailors a plan to develop him properly they will be richly rewarded. Think Monta Ellis.
