2011 Draft Profile - Marshon Brooks

Brooks’ value is on the rise since his impressive combine performance backed up a very impressive sr season. Marshon is a long 6ft 5, and showed a variety of ways to score from the wing. He is very quick, in the open court and likes to attack the basket, definitely has a scorer’s mentality. He can play above the rim but is adept at avoiding defenders with his length to lay the ball in and convert difficult shots. Marshon has one of the smoothest one on one games in the draft, he uses a lot of fakes and hesitations to get an open shot. He can pull up or post up or make scoop shots or turnarounds by the basket. Brooks is a good ball handler, does a good job of using his body to shield defenders as he feels his way to get a shot off, has a high release on his shot which is difficult to block. He is a good scorer in traffic and doesn’t need a lot of space. His length and quickness allow him to make defensive plays and compete on the glass. Also has a scorer’s confidence and put up a 52 pt game his sr season. Capable 3pt shooter.

Marshon came from nowhere this year. Really benefited from a strong combine otherwise scouts only have 1 out of 4 yrs of college basketball where he possessed the ability of a NBA prospect. Has a scorer’s mentality but not a pure shooter, he can sometimes try to do too much and not get his teammates involved. His quickness is good with the ball in his hands when he knows where to go and get to spots on the court, but he may lack the strength and explosiveness to consistently stay in front of wings defensively.

Brooks has a good buzz and may be a good pick for a team in the late 1st or 2nd rd, but adjusting to be able to score in half court without a pure outside shot can be difficult going against the level of athletes in the NBA. He will be labeled a scorer and probably will have to start by only getting limited minutes off the bench so it will be all about maintaining his growing confidence to use the limited time to get buckets. I can see Marshon having a Flip Murray like role where you bring him off the bench and give him isolation looks on offense to make some buckets while resting your starters.
