2012 Draft Profile - Darius Johnson-Odom

Daruis Johnson-Odom is a 6'2" 215 pound guard who played his first year of college basketball at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, and then transferred to Marquette University to play his final three years. DJO was a first team NJCAA All-American before he arrived at Marquette, and received honors from the Big East, and nationally after arriving, including: 2nd team All Big East 2010-11, 1st team All Big East 2011-12, and AP All-American Honorable Mention 2011-12.

DJO finished 2nd in the Big East in scoring this past season at 18.3 ppg; he also shot 44%fg, 38%3pt(40% career), and 76%ft up from the 67% he shot as a sophomore. DJO is most dangerous when he is running around screens or spot up shooting, but he's starting to become a more effective player off the dribble as well. Over the past two years he's started to use the step back jumper a lot more, and he has a very good pump fake that he uses to get his man off his feet so he can attack the paint. In transition, DJO runs the floor well and has the power to finish through contact at the rim, or spot up behind the three point line.

On defense DJO plays with good energy and toughness; he also has the strength to hold his own against some of the bigger players who try to post him up. DJO does a pretty good job of staying in front of his man on the perimeter, and has a 6'6" wingspan that helps him disrupt passing lanes and contest jumpers. DJO also worked very well within Marquette's team schemes, as a pressure guard in the full court presses, recovering well in zones, or fighting through the pick and roll in man to man. His biggest problem as a defender in the NBA will be his height, because he has all of the other tools he'll need to be a successful defender at the next level.

Most draft projections have DJO going somewhere in the mid to late 2nd round, but if NBA teams feel they can get by with him at the point over stretches his stock might climb a little. NBA Comparison: Mo Williams
