2012 Draft Profile - Dion Waiters

Dion Waiters is a 6 ft 4 in guard from Syracuse University. He is just slightly undersized to play shooting guard in the NBA. However, his size is not an overwhelming concern. Dion is relatively young for a prospect. He will be 20 years old at the time of the draft. During his sophomore season, he averaged 12.6 points per game as Syracuse’s 2nd leading scorer. It is important to note that out of the 37 games Dion Waiters played in last year, he did not start in a single game. Although he did not start, he still played 24.1 minutes per game. Thus, Dion demonstrated an outstanding ability to come off of the bench and score in a sixth man-like role. Dion averaged 21 points per 40 minutes, placing 5th in the Big East Conference. While he is a threat to score 20 points in any given game, he could show more consistency on a game-to-game basis.

Although Dion already has the ability to score, he can improve his offensive repertoire by improving his shot. While his shot is not considered a weakness, Dion shot just 72.9% from the free throw line and 36% from three-point range. These numbers are average. Dion can improve his shot because he is often off balance when he releases the ball. Dion also could improve his footwork coming off of screens. Additionally, he struggles to create scoring opportunities for his teammates on the floor. Dion averaged just 2.5 assists per game compared to 1.3 turnovers per game. He has shown flashes of being able to distribute the ball. Because he lacks the elite size of a shooting guard, he must improve his passing ability as well as his ball handling. Oddly, during regular season games against top 25 ranked teams last season, Dion averaged only 8.6 points while shooting 32.6% from the field and 63% from the free throw line. This stat is concerning because against the physically superior teams of the NCAA he struggled.

Syracuse University is notorious for Jim Boeheim’s 2-3 zone. While his zone is successful, it prevented Dion’s development defensively. He needs experience playing 1-on-1 defensive. Also, Dion has to learn the defensive rotation of a man-to-man scheme. However, he has the physical tools to be a solid defender.
