Hollis Thompson

Position: SF
Team: Georgetown
Class: Junior

2012 Draft Profile - Hollis Thompson

Hollis Thompson is a 6'8" 215 pound junior forward from Georgetown University. In Hollis' last year at Georgetown he averaged, 12.8 ppg, 5.5 rebs, 67% ft, 43% 3pt, and 46% fg. Thompson has a sound basketball IQ, long wingspan, and good athletic ability, despite being somewhat stiff in some of his movement.

On offense, Thompson's greatest strength is his ability to shoot the ball; he's most dangerous when he gets the opportunity to spot up. He's one of the best marksman from behind the arc in college basketball, and has a career 3pt% of 43.9. Hollis has a high level of confidence and is blessed with a shooter's conscience; he has no problem with taking, making, or missing pressurized shots. Thompson's also worked to improve his accuracy coming off screens and like most players in Georgetown's offense, he moves well without the ball. At times Thompson's been successful in posting up smaller defenders, but he'll have trouble using that part of his game at the next level without making significant improvement. Thompson's also had trouble creating his own shot, and it's likely he'll have more difficulty when he moves on to the NBA as he'll be facing stronger and quicker opponents.

At the defensive end Thompson was a member of one of the best defensive teams in the country. The Hoyas held opponents to 59.4 ppg with a stifling mix of zone and man to man defense. Thompson is active on the perimeter and moves his feet, but still has trouble staying in front of smaller, quicker opposition in man to man situations. That being said, his length does make it difficult to clear him, and it gives him the opportunity to contest shots even if he gets beat. In Georgetown's zone defense, Thompson did a good job of rotating, trapping in the corners, and closing out to contest shots. Thompson could be called an average rebounder, but would probably have better numbers here if he spent more time closer to the rim instead of out at the three point line.

Thompson would've done himself a favor by staying in school, expanding his offensive game, and adding some extra muscle to his frame. Right now Thompson is projected as either a 2nd round pick, or an undrafted free agent; certainly not what an early entrant leaves school for. His ability to knock down the three, space the floor, and fit well as a team defender should land him somewhere before the draft is over, NBA Comparison: James Jones
