2012 Draft Profile - Jared Sullinger

At 6ft8 270lbs there are not many players in today’s game that are similar to Jared Sullinger and that is a big reason that he has been so dominant in the Big 10 ever since he arrived last season. He is a double double machine down low and a man among boys on the low block and what I like is that his individual dominance leads to team success and makes other players better. Jared’s weight is somewhere between 260-280lbs, so he is very thick especially in the torso and lower half which helps him take up space down low and gives him an advantage in rebounding. Jared’s load makes it long nights for his opposition, he is built for contact and loves to bang down low. Jared also comes with a great set of hands, good footwork and a nice touch on offense to make him the #1 option on one of the nation’s best teams to go with his dominance on the glass. What I really like about Jared is that he came back to school even though he could have been a top 5 pick possibly last year and you can see that he works hard on his game for the improvements that he has made in FT shooting and getting his body in better condition. For a guy his size he does an honorable job at changing ends and plays well at the end of games. Coaches love Jared because he automatically givex his team an edge with his toughness and he works hard and is unselfish.

With Jared’s size there are concerns about his long term projection in the NBA, he has battled through minor injuries in college and is not as athletic as most starters in the NBA. Defensively might be tough because NBA PFs are going to have an athleticism advantage and centers are going to have a height advantage.

Its hard not to like Jared especially if you like old school basketball. He is above average in post up game, rebounding, toughness and competitiveness, a mid range jumper is still improving. However there are not many players similar to Sullinger which makes him kinda risky. Athletically I think he closest to Glen Davis but not with as refined of a jumper yet and better intangibles. Luis Scola is another decent comparison.

2011 Draft Profile - Jared Sullinger

Jared Sullinger is a power big man with strong low post moves and natural rebounding instincts. Although slightly undersized at 6'8 for an ideal NBA power forward, he more than makes up for it with his ability to use his body to his advantage to boxout and push his opponent out of the lane. He uses all 260 pounds to reek havoc on the boards and wear down defenders. He has a decent mid-range jumper, although it could use some improvement. He does not show raw NBA athleticism and could stand to improve his conditioning and speed to get back on defense. His biggest struggle when moving to the NBA game will be against taller, more athletic big men.

An old school power forward. His wide body takes up a lot of space, and a natural rebounder. As a freshman he is a man among boys in the pac 10. He can manhandle his opponents in the paint and also shows a nice mid range shooting touch. Still very young which is scary if he stays in the right shape, if his shooting improves as well he could be capable of 20pts per game eventually. He will give your team a tough attitude. Biggest concern is his height. Will not be a big shot blocker, and with his body type he may be anchored too low to score on put backs like he does in college. He will give your team an attitude of toughness.

As a throwback player in a new school league he may have problems keeping up with the athleticism in the NBA, especially if he doesn’t control his weight. He has similar make up of Kevin Love, in NBA scouts eyes he will benefit from Love’s success and Sullinger’s ability to find the winners circle in high school and college while being the star player.

NBA comparison:Worse case- Glen Davis

Best case- Kevin Love
