2012 Draft Profile - John Jenkins

John Jenkins is a 6'4" 215 pound shooting guard, who spent 3 seasons at Vanderbilt before declaring for this summer's NBA draft.

Offensively one word describes Jenkins game, scorer. Jenkins has the ability to score in just about every way you could want a shooting guard to score. The 3 point range of Jenkins stretches beyond the NBA line and he's deadly accurate(43%). It's not just the accuracy of Jenkins range that makes it so deadly though, it's the many ways he can stoke the 3. Jenkins is not only effective in catch and shoot, but also coming off screens, pulling up in transition, and from the jab step, rise and fire. These aspects of his game also translate well inside the 3 point line making him a difficult cover all over the court. Depending on the match up defensively Jenkins has the ability to go off the dribble as well, and that brings us to a negative, athleticism. John is lacking in the athleticism and quickness department, and when he gets to the NBA he could have trouble getting by the 2 guards that he'll see on a nightly basis.

Defensively Jenkins gives good effort, but this is another area where his lack of athleticism gives him trouble. Quicker guards give him trouble in one on one situations on the perimeter, and stronger, more post oriented NBA 2 guards could expose a lack of strength that college guards couldn't. He'll definitely benefit from going to a team, that doesn't focus on playing a ton of man to man on the defensive end.

Once drafted, Jenkins will probably be used coming off screens and spotted up behind the 3 point line on the offensive end. Defensively, the fact that he's willing to give effort will go a long way because there will probably be some rough days ahead. As a rookie he's probably looking at coming off the bench to add some scoring punch for somebody's second unit, but his shooting ability could land him as a starter someday. NBA Comparison: J.J. Redick.
