2012 Draft Profile - Kendall Marshall
At 6ft 3 185lbs Kendal Marshall has good size for PG and is a sneaky good athlete, but it is an exceptional feel for the game that sets Kendall Marshall apart as a PG prospect. It has been years since college basketball has seen a player put up Kendall’s assist and assist/turnover numbers. What tells me a lot about Kendall is how much better UNC was last year after they inserted him into the starting lineup they went from a struggling team to a top team in the nation and the individual play of his teammates improved greatly. It is almost like he is a coach on the floor and has a heightened understanding of how to make each teammate better and more productive. He also uses his craftiness on defense. What I like about Kendall is he is a true PG and is comfortable running the offense in any tempo and has showed that he can elevate his game during big games and makes good plays during crunch time. Although he is not known as a scorer or shooter he has a nice left handed stroke and could someday be a threat from the outside a la Jason Kidd. The negatives would be that Kendall is pretty one dimensional right now as a faciliatator. He doesn’t look to score a lot and doesn’t do much rebounding either so I wonder if he is tunnel vision on passing and misses other opportunities to help his team. Also, with the PG play right now in the NBA he is easily a notch behind Rose, Westboook, Wall level of athleticism and he may be mismatched a lot defensively by starting NBA PGs.
Kendall Marshall is definitely one of the best pure passers in all of basketball. His understanding of playing the PG position is off the charts and shows up with how easily he gels with his team and makes his teammates better. Not only is he creative but he is efficient and steady. I wonder about what his role is in the NBA. I definitely could see him as a starter as long as his defense and shooting isn’t too much of a liability, as a backup he can give you some steady minutes but he doesnt bring the energy you look for in guys coming off the bench. My best comparison is Jose Calderon and I am a believer that Kendall Marshall will have a long NBA career.
