2012 Draft Profile - Kevin Murphy
Murphy is a small school scoring machine. The comparisons to marshon Brooks are clear, but also misleading. Murphy comes from a smaller program for one thing, and simply isnt as polished a product as Brooks was. That said, he is a flat out scorer. There is little doubt he can get the ball in the net. At 6 6" he has good metrics for a wing player, albeit with shorter arms than is deemed desirable. He has a lethal first step....a simply stupefying explosion that ranks alongside the best prospects in this class. His shooting mechanics are not perfect, but are still pretty good. He gets elevation and has a very quick release. He projects as being able to get his shot off in the NBA. What he doesnt have is a great passers instincts. At Tenn tech, Murphy was the star and he did everything ISO. He is going to face a learning curve at the pro level in how to integrate himself into a system. On the defensive side, things are far from clear. For one thing, the level of competition Murphy faced was less than elite. Secondly he simply wasn't called on to guard the top players for the competition. At the PIT Murphy put a lot of concerns to rest. He displayed the quickness and scoring abilities one associates with top prospects. Murphy may go high in the second round just based on the fact he figures to be a guy who can come off the bench and rack up some baskets.Player profile submitted by: John Steppling
