2012 Draft Profile - Marquis Teague

Teague is a score first point guard but he does have excellent court vision and will make the occasional flashy pass. He has the quickness to stifle even the best defenders. His handles are almost unmatched giving him more opportunities to penetrate. Teague is also a decent shooter able to hit from mid range, off the dribble or from deep. His lateral quickness makes him a pretty good defender as well. He needs to work on his jump shot and hitting more consistently and he must also work on his decision making if he is gonna play long stretches. His game reminds me of a modern day Kevin (KJ) Johnson.

Marquis Teague has definitely benefited from watching his brother Jeff make the progressions from high school to college to the NBA, but he also benefits from having NBA tools. Marquis is a jet with the basketball, he knows how to get to the spots he wants to get to and put pressure on the defense and that cannot be taught. At 6ft 2 175lbs he is long and deceptively strong and adept at finishing himself in the painted area. He also is advanced in the 2 man game, he can run pick and rolls well, he looks to be a general on the floor and shows leadership despite being the youngest player on his team. Teague shows very good ability on ball defense. He will benefit from working on the range on his jumper but his pull up game and shot making ability inside is nice. Marquis’ greatest strength is probably the most important quality for a pg, he has the quickness and handle to put pressure on the defense and find easy shots for himself or teammates. Also, does a good job managing turnovers for a young pg.

Marquis is a little on the small side but plays bigger and his outside shooting and FT shooting still needs some work. I think playing at Kentucky will be good for Teague because he still needs to learn to take care of his teammates. He is more natural finding shots for himself rather than others, if he wants to be a strong leader he needs to trust his teammates to score.

Marquis definitely has the skill set and makeup of an NBA starter and looks like he can probably join the line of one and done Kentucky PGs. What I like about him is how much he has improved, during his last 2 years of high school he elevated his game as much as anyone and he is advanced at some of the finer points of playing pg. Marquis reminds me a lot of Terrell Brandon, a guy that you can safely run your offense through, he can find a good look for a teammate or he can score himself.
