2012 Draft Profile - Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is really making a name for himself as college basketball gets into conference play. Michael is arguably the best overall player on one of the nation’s best teams due to his intensity on defense, efficient offensive play and versatility. There is a lot to like about Michael, at about 6ft7 215lbs he has ideal size and athleticism to play the wing in the NBA, he can play above the rim as well as handle the basketball along the perimeter or slash to the basket. Nobody disputes that Kidd-Gilchrist has the tools to succeed at the next level but what really makes Michael special is that as a young top flight prospect he is a committed stopper on the defensive who can create turnovers and start fastbreaks and finish them with authority. Although he has the ability to average 20+ per game, he chooses to find his points in the flow of the game and not hurt his team by taking bad shots. He also hits the glass hard, and has 3pt range. When analyzing his character at this point he gets an A+, he competes hard and keeps a level head, strong work ethic and unselfish teammate.

There are not many negatives with Michael but I don’t see him as a strong one on one player at this point offensively. He doesn’t take defenders into the post and although his outside shoot is good I don’t know if he will be a specialist as a shooter.

I think Michael profiles as a fringe all star level player who has a chance to make his team much better without having to be a leading scorer. I can see him having a reputation as a top defender and 2nd or 3rd option scorer. I think that Kidd-Gilchrist compares favorably to Luol Deng and has Scottie Pippen potential.
