2012 Draft Profile - Tony Wroten

Tony Wroten finished the season as the Pac 12 MVP in his freshman season in what is considered a down year for the conference. The perception of a mediocre conference competition doesn’t change the fact that Wroten is a prospect all scouts will take a long look at. Tony doesn’t turn 19 until April and is probably the best athlete in the conference and possibly the top freshman guard in the country. Tony has ideal size for a guard at 6ft5 205, his bloodlines are exceptional, with a plethora of family members excelling at high levels in track and basketball, his father was a nfl tight end and Tony has the type of build that could easily get up to 220lbs. Athleticism-wise Wroten is a freak, he can play above the rim and has an explosive burst that has allowed him to get to the painted area at will all season long, and be able to lead the league in FT attempts. Tony has exceptional body control and is capable of converting difficult shots that would be ill advised by most players. Tony adds a lot of length to his explosiveness and can cover a lot of ground which has allowed him to lead the conference in steals and be a strong rebounder. What makes him even more difficult to defend is that he is lefthanded. I have been impressed with Tony’s demeanor this year, with questions of his maturity Tony has been very consistent, and plays very hard every night and is leading his team to wins. Often times prospects like Tony Wroten that are considered elite athletes even by NBA standards lack a feel for the game, this is not the case with Tony, he has good court vision and even though he is playing sg this year he is a play maker who makes creative passes most players don’t see. Tony is versatile, he can play either guard position at the next level and can match up with any type of player in the backcourt which really helps his value.

For negatives you have to start with outside shooting. Tony would easily average 20pts per game if he was an average FT and 3pt shooter. His fg% has gone way down throughout the season because the word is out to play off him and make him shoot from the outside. What will comfort most is that Tony has a nice release, and he is young and because of his ability to blow by the defender he has not needed to shoot from outside in his career, so it is not like Tony cannot shoot, it is that his outside shot is not developed yet because he has not gotten enough repetition. Also, Tony can be eratic, he will usually make a play or 2 per game that makes you wonder what he is thinking, and averages as many turnovers as assists. Tony started his hs career highly touted but by his sr year due to a football injury that wiped out a year and inconsistent and even lazy labels, to the surprise of many Tony was passed on a McDonalds all American selection, this motivated his breakout freshman season as he has had something to prove, but it is noteworthy that Tony could have a high maintenance reputation. Tony is a guy that makes the impossible look easy and sometimes the easy look impossible.

The best comparison for Tony Wroten right now would be Tyreke Evans. They are the about the same size, and can play multiple positions. Tony’s strengths are up tempo and one on one play and can also create for teammates and stuff the stat sheet. If Tony leaves right now I see him entering the NBA as a dynamic weapon off the bench. If he comes back to UW, improves his outside shot and makes strides and can take UW deep into post season play than Tony is definitely a future top 5 pick worthy of building your team around.
