2012 Draft Profile - Tyshawn Taylor

Tyshawn Taylor’s role for Kansas was significantly larger for his senior season. Along with Thomas Robinson, he responded to the challenge by leading them to the National Championship Game. He is extremely durable, missing only 2 games in his 4-year career at Kansas.

During the 2011-12 season, he averaged 16.6 points per game. His points per game average escalated from 9.2 points per game from the 2010-11 season. However, this increase in points was do to an increase of volume of shots not efficiency. Tyshawn had a 47.7 FG% this year and a 47.9 FG% last season. Although no improvement is shown in efficiency, it must be noted that his FGA increased by 195% from the previous season and his FG% remained about constant. Tyshawn does show inconsistency when scoring. For example, during a 6-game stretch from 2/11/12 to 2/25/12 he scored 19, 12, 20, 9, 12, and 20 points in each respective game. During his four-year career, he has shown little to no improvement in his shooting ability. For example, he is a remarkably poor free-throw shooter for his position. He shots 68% from the free throw line, dropping 3.1% from the previous season. This inefficiency and inconsistency on the offensive side of the ball has plagued his career. It is demonstrated by an offensive rating of 104.5, which was 939th in the nation during the 2011-12 season. Additionally, his court vision and decision-making are problematic for a point guard. His 3.5 TOPG was 2nd in the Big Ten Conference and 18th in the nation. Moreover, he does average 4.8 assists per game.

Tyshawn utilizes exceptional lateral quickness and a quick hand to average 1.3 steals per game. He has solid footwork, demonstrated by averaging only 2 fouls per game. During his career, he fouled out of only 2 games. His rebounding is especially poor, grabbing just 91 rebounds in 39 games during the 2011-2012 season. Tyshawn does have many of the tools to succeed in the NBA as a defender. Combined with his quick hands and his lateral quickness, he has a solid 6’3’’ frame.
