2013 Draft Profile - Alex Len

Len didn't have enough minutes, really, last season to determine just where he stood on the national scene. This year however, Len has had a distinctly positive impact while playing 26 minutes a game. The Ukrainian native stands an imposing 7’ 1" with good reach and strong (but soft) hands. As a freshman, Len already showed good skills under the basket, but played only 20 min a game and often seemed uncertain of his role. This year his confidence is much higher, and his game has improved in every respect.

Offensively, Len's shooting is better, though he isn't really a face the basket threat outside three feet of the hoop. He has excellent hands, and good court sense. In fact, his court sense is outstanding. He was plagued with careless turnovers last year, but that seems to have been corrected. His scoring is up from six a game to 15, with nine boards. Those are more than respectable numbers, with a solid 57% shooting percentage. Len is not an elite athlete, but saying that for a guy 7'1" is very relative. Scouts are already talking of Len as a sure lottery pick now, something you didn't hear last year.

Defensively, Len led the NCAA last season (per minutes played) in shot blocking (over Henson and Bernard James), and has continued that this year. Len projects as one of the few true centers this season, and compares to Tyler Zeller in a lot of ways. He is probably a better defender though, but has much the same sort of promise. How high he goes will be determined by what scouts see his physical growth curve being. Like a lot of big men in college, Len is far from physically mature, but if one sees him being able to add 20 more pounds and not lose the agility he has, then Len is a top five guy.
