2013 Draft Profile - Alex Poythress

A highly sought after recruit, Poythress ended up with Calipari in Kentucky. Poythress is 6 8 or 6'9" depending who is measuring, but has outstanding length with a reported 7'1" wingspan. Poythress is a plus athlete, no question, with excellent quickness, hops, and lateral speed. His defensive promise is very high. As a shot blocker and guy who will disrupt passing lanes, his ceiling is elite. What he doesn't show yet is much in the way of ball handling skills. The biggest concern for Poythress right now is where he projects at the NBA level. One is, fairly or unfairly, going to think about Derrik Williams. Poythress is not Williams, but he does suffer a bit of the 'tweener' problem. Still a freshman, Poythress has the body type that can put on weight, so his eventual position may well be as a four, which would make him slightly undersized. But unless he quickly develops some handle, that's where he's going to play. Does he have enough explosivness to compensate for a size deficiency as an NBA four? Personally I'm not sure. Poythress certainly can finish, and his defense ...at least against college competition, is remarkable. Poythress is clearly a smart kid, and one can expect him to work on his over all game, but questions remain about what position he is going to play down the road.
