2013 Draft Profile - Archie GoodwinThere is no denying that Goodwin is one of those guys with a special flair, a charisma about his game. The Kentucky freshman is a very explosive and fluid athlete, but he is also very much a work in progress. Goodwin has been doing a lot of ball handling for the Wildcats, and that's never going to be his role at the next level. Goodwin has exceptional acceleration, the kind that GMs love to see. It is one of those things you just can't teach. Right now, Goodwin is still a baby, though, and stuck on a team that needs him to play most of the time as de facto point guard. What he is, in reality, is a two guard, and probably one that can or should score a great deal.
But that's the problem, Goodwin looks the part, but in truth his shooting is far from elite. His jumpers all look a bit different, and none look like Ray Allen. He can get to the basket, though, and that may end up his greatest strength. Goodwin defensively is on a steep learning curve. Which isn't to say he's bad, because he's not. He has the physical tools to be excellent, and with an exceptional wingspan, he should develop into a plus defender. At 6 5" Goodwin could well still be growing, as he's only 18. One would hope he sticks around for a sophomore year with Coach Cal, but the odds are against it. If he does come out, he's going to be facing grown men who wont allow the sort of space he enjoys now for those pull up shots he's taking...and too often not making.
