2013 Draft Profile - BJ Young

Critics and scouts seem to either love or hate B.J. Young. Used as a spark plug scorer off the bench, the sophomore guard has unquestionable speed and quickness. A blinding first step allows him to separate, and a scorers mentality makes for instant offense. At 6'3" and only 160 lbs, there are going to be questions about his strength and his ability to put on weight. He draws comparisons to Lou Williams, Avery Bradley and even Will Barton. Young has exceptional explosion, but only a good, not great, jump shot. Still, a bit like C. J. McCollum, he finds a way to score. While not a selfish player, Young doesn't often look to pass, but then that's not what Arkansas is asking him to do. Young often plays a de-facto point guard role and has been, so far at least, pretty turnover prone. He is also not a great leaper, which combined with his lack of muscle, has resulted in a number of blown lay ups and dunks. He simply doesn't finish that well.

Defensively Young is a mixed bag. Great lateral quickness and long arms give him an on-ball ability to be disruptive, but he is just as prone to lose his man and to blow assignments. His lack of strength also causes him to play soft far too often. It's good to remember Young is still only a sophomore, and a lot of this will come with time if he works at it. Young was suspended at the start of the year for 'violation of team rules'. Off court concerns have been raised before so GMs are going to have to do a lot of vetting where Young is concerned. Guys who can light it up like Young are always going to be over-hyped, and that may be the case here, but at the same time, there is no question the Razorback guard has exceptional natural talent.
