2013 Draft Profile - Ben McLemore

Freshmen guard Ben McLemore has gotten a ton of attention very quickly this season, and it's easy to see why. At 6'5" with good length, McLemore just looks the part of a classic Ray Allen two guard. He has great acceleration and leaping ability, and his jumper is textbook pretty. Bill Self of Kansas has praised his potential over and over. It's not clear if McLemore will come out this year, and one sort of hopes he doesn't. He may have elite raw talent, and a great shot, but the subtleties of the game still elude him. Having said that, what is also clear is that he has already shown marked improvement.

McLemore has a high release and with his elevation has shown no problem shooting over even quality defenders. He can take guys off the dribble, but it's not really what he does best. Ball handling is often a skill that needs work for flashy freshman, and McLemore is no exception.

On the defensive end, from the little seen so far, he is still learning. Again, though, the key word is potential. McLemore seems focused and a hard worker on defense, it's just he often finds himself a step late or a bit out of position. Nothing that can’t, or won’t be corrected. I don't think he has the aggressive attitude to really be a defensive standout, but he certainly has the athleticism to be better than average. The St. Louis native sat out a year, so while a freshman he is actually a year older than most in his class. A mature young man with crazy upside, all that's left is the refining of what is already there. Can he be a Ray Allen? Hard to say yet. Certainly he can get close with a couple years more experience.
