2013 Draft Profile - CJ McCollum

McCollum came to everyone's attention when he abused Duke last year in the NCAA tourney with a 30pt performance. Playing in the Patriot League doesnt usually draw much notice but McCollum's break out game has put the spotlight on the 6'3" senior. McCollum is natural scorer. He is one of those guys who finds a way to get points despite being only an average spot up shooter. As a point guard, he shows plus ball handling skills, though hasnt yet shown the strength to defend the position as well. Projecting McCollum to the NBA one sees a lot of Steph Curry, another small school star. He doesn't have Curry's quickness, but over all his game shows similarities. He has excellent court vision, is a dependable passer and has a plus hoop IQ. The questions have to do with his limited athleticism. He isn't a bad athlete by any means, but he's not a guy who is going to be blowing past NBA caliber guards. Where he goes in the draft will be determined by individual workouts, and how he does in post season platforms. The two biggest issues are can he defend, reasonably, the likes of a Jeff Teague or a Ty Lawson. And can he score against quicker stronger NBA point guards through his crafty change of direction and a deadly fall back jumper from mid-range.
