2012 Draft Profile - Cody Zeller
It is hard to believe that this baby faced freshman is becoming the best player all around in the Big 10 outside of Jared Sullinger. Cody is somewhat of a late bloomer as he has continued to grow into a 6ft11 225lb body that should only add more weight naturally as he matures. Cody is quite different of a prospect than his sr brother Tyler. Cody has a great feel for the game especially on the offensive end.. He is good feet and good hands so with his length he finds his fair share of high % buckets. What is most impressive is his mid range game for such a young player. He has a nice jumper and is efficient from the FT line, he has a good first step and is always in contol and his a good set of low post moves and a deadly jump hook that he shoots over his left shoulder. Cody also runs the floor well and active as a help defender and rebounder. Early on he has showed clutch play late in games and is the guy that Indiana run the offense through. He certainly has benefited a lot from being raised with 2 older brother who play and has made a seemless transition for a freshman. Good character and level headed demeanor. As weaknesses go Cody certainly needs to add weight if he wants to play down low in the NBA. I hope he makes the same commitment as his brother Tyler has and doesn’t settle for being a finesse big man. Although nimble on the court Cody doesn’t look like the explosive athlete that can finish through traffic.
At this age it is difficult too project Cody. Certainly he has been very impressive as a freshman and could only get better but he needs to add more weight and time will tell on just how much he can develop as an athlete. At just turned 19 there is a perception that he could have a high ceiling. His game is reminiscent of Pau Gasol, it will be interesting to see if he can develop to that level but if not I can see him being a Drew Gooden or Jason Thompson big who gets paid for being a steady offensive threat from mid range and down low.
