2013 Draft Profile - Rodney Williams

One of my favorite players in this draft class is Minnesota senior Rodney Williams. Williams is the sort of player coaches tend to love. At 6'6" and 205 lbs, Williams has prototypical size for a small forward. Highly recruited out of high school, Williams struggled some in his first years but began to demonstrate flashes of his real ability as a junior. Offensively, Williams has plus quickness, with good hops and quick feet. While not an elite athlete, he is certainly well above average. His offensive skill set is pretty well rounded, though his shot at times tends to go south. Still, this season he is shooting 40% of his threes (though its a small sample number). What he does best is move without the ball and find space in transition. He has a superior court sense, and this exceptionally high hoop IQ, which allows him to get open a lot more than not. He is also an excellent passer and has great hands. Not a real shot creator. He’s an able finisher at the rim.

Defensively, Williams is simply excellent. Projecting him forward, NBA teams are going to be looking at a four year player who reliably can defend several positions. His lateral quickness is outstanding, and his temperament is always to attack at this end of the floor. Williams is not the sexiest pick, but he will find a home in the NBA just off his outstanding defensive ability. The only knock on Williams is less than solid ball handling, a trait he shares with North Carolina's Reggie Bullock. While both are plus defenders, Bullock is an elite catch and shoot guy, and Williams isn't. But he should be able to carve out a role like Alan Anderson, a P.J Tucker or a Quincey Pondexter at the pro level.
