2014 Draft Profile - Cleanthony Early

Strengths:
Early knows how to get baskets. He is an extremely efficient scorer capable of getting baskets in a number of different ways. He is excellent when spotting up, but also excels in transition as well as cutting and slashing in the half court.

He played PF almost exclusively at Wichita St. so he has developed a very good post game over the last couple of seasons and he has shown the ability to make smaller defenders pay on the block.

He knows his strengths and takes advantage of the mismatches that he has, taking smaller players to the block, and blowing by bigger power forwards. He is also a very good rebounder for his position, especially due to his athleticism.

Has shown flashes of being an excellent defender, locking down on the perimeter at times and coming up with some very nice steals and blocks, but must learn to do it on a consistent basis.

Weaknesses:
Early went from low-level junior college to Wichita St., who played in a weak conference. Needless to say, the level of competition he played against regularly gas been called into question. While he did post good games against the likes of Louisville and Kentucky, he will still need to prove he can do it on a regular basis.

He also has spent very little time on the perimeter, as he served as the team’s power forward. As such, his ballhandling is average at best and is best when going in a straight line towards the basket.

His passing also leaves a lot to be desired, averaging less than an assist a game as a senior and while his shooting has improved, it is questionable whether he will be consistent from NBA three-point range.

In general he is an unfinished product which is worrisome seeing as how he is one of the oldest prospects in this draft. That being said, he was the best player on one of the top teams in college basketball and stepped his game up in big moments. That in itself makes him someone to watch.
