Position: PF/C
Team: Stanford
Class: Senior

2014 Draft Profile - Dwight Powell

Strengths:
Powell is one of the most skilled big men in the draft with legitimate size. Measuring 6’11 will allow him to play both the power forward and center positions at the next level.

He is very versatile on offense, possessing a proficient post game with a solid jump hook, but is also capable of operating from the high post. His senior year saw him operate as the hub of the team’s offense from the elbow and he was able to see relative success.

While his jump shot still lacks consistency, he still flashes good mechanics and the ability to knock shots down from 20 feet both standing still and while on the move. His 3 assists per game also show the ability to distribute, and he possesses solid court vision.

Defensively, he has improved over the years. While he will never be a top flight rim protector, he has shown an improved ability to move his feet on the perimeter and stay in front of guys, even on the pick and roll.

Weaknesses:
His jump hook over his left shoulder is definitely his best post move. Unfortunately, it is basically his only post move. He struggles going over his right shoulder, and lacks consistent counter moves, so he ends up being relatively predictable.

He also lacks strength, specifically in his lower body. This manifests itself in a number of ways.

Offensively, he struggles to consistently generate deep post position as he can be moved off the block. Defensively, he can be bullied at times by stronger players, and can be easily boxed out on rebounding attempts.

People also wanted to see more growth from him between his junior and senior seasons. His lack of progression gives teams pause about how much more he can improve in the NBA.

With some work, he could carve out a decent niche for himself as a floor stretching power forward similar to Brandon Bass. But he would need some serious progression before he gets to that point.
