2014 Draft Profile - Jabari Parker

Jabari Parker hails from the hoop mecca of Chicago with a legendary pedigree, and is not disappointing in his Frosh campaign at Duke. He turns 19 in March with a very advanced game. Parker is a scorer and is not selfish. He racks up 20 point games and mostly does it efficiently, letting the game come to him and deferring to pass when he needs to. Parker can slash from the perimeter or shoot the 3. At 6' 8" 230ish he has a great body and first step, and is a nightmare one on one. He has been very good on the low block as well and finishing in traffic. Thought to be a SF, Parker has been forced to play alot down low for an undersized team and has become one of the best rebounders and shot blockers in the ACC.

The knocks on Parker is that his athleticism is not elite, and that his game has advanced to the point he is close to his ceiling. Also, questions about his position, a hybrid forward may struggle to match up defensively. His body isnt chiseled like other top prospects. I believe scouts can over-criticize jabari by questioning his athleticism. He is usually the most athletic guy on the court in college and no stranger to the highlight reel. Because his fundamentals are so refined, and his athleticism is not on the Wiggins/Gordon level. I think there is an overreaction about how he stacks up athletically when there is plenty of tape that shoots down that criticism.

What I like about Parker is even if he has deficiencies on D, he is fully engaged on both ends of the floor, competes hard, is a good teammate. For a budding star player he doesn't let emotions or pressure get to him. For a franchise player, he has nearly everything you ask for from his pedigree, talent, character. If he enters the draft he will be one of the youngest guys in the NBA, it may take a year or 2 to transition but in the long run I think he is a safe #1 pick even for a loaded draft.

Comparable - more unselfish Melo/Pierce
