2014 Draft Profile - Patric Young

Strengths:
Young is a physical specimen who measured very well at the NBA’s Pre-Draft combine. With the downsizing of the NBA in general, Young could flourish as a center in the NBA, which helps as he has no perimeter game to speak of.

He is a solid finisher at the rim, who has developed throughout his four years in Gainesville. He added a couple of decent post moves, and a jump hook that is effective at times. He is also great at cutting to the basket, and can be a devastating finisher off the pick-and-roll.

Young’s calling card, however, is his defense and rebounding. His physical tools and athleticism make him a terror on the glass. He is an elite offensive rebounder who gets a lot of baskets simply on putbacks.

Defensively he is difficult to move out of his position and his length allows him to challenge shots in the post. He also possesses the quickness to stay in front of most guards on the pick-and-roll, a must in this age of the NBA.

Weaknesses:
Young will never be an offensive force at the NBA level. He doesn’t possess the footwork and touch around the basket to thrive consistently. Even having physical advantages over most of his opponents, he rarely put together dominant performances on a consistent basis.

Over four years, he never improved the way you expected him to. He was a potential lottery pick as a freshman, but fell into the second round, mainly due to lack of progression through the years.

Also, his defensive rebounding numbers are low, which is weird, especially considering his excellent offensive rebounding. You would think that he would be more dominant on that end, instead he posted merely average numbers.

In the end, Young offers potential as a hustle, energy, rebounding big off the bench. Someone like a Trevor Booker, but with more size. He will never be a force, but bigs who hustle and play hard every night tend to find a spot in the league. Young should be no different.
