2015 Draft Profile - Cliff Alexander

Strengths
Cliff Alexander isn’t necessarily the most skilled big man in this draft, but he makes up for it with his motor, effort, and heart. Combine that with his excellent physical tools and Alexander holds a lot of promise.

Alexander has solid size for the power forward position. He is a great athlete who possesses good lateral movement for his size. He is a good rebounder and especially excels on the offensive glass where he averages more than two a game despite playing less than 20 minutes.

His motor is constantly going. He gives non-stop energy and effort at all time and his leaping ability and length allow him to be great on defense where he has flashed the potential to be a solid rim protector.

Weaknesses
Alexander is far from a finished product. He lacks any go-to moves on the block and while he has decent shooting form, he is far from reliable as a mid-range shooter. He will have to develop some consistent offensive skill.

Defensively he is also raw and doesn’t yet have the knowledge and understanding of team defense, angles, and spacing. He can get lost off the ball and chase blocks which leaves him out of position more often than you would like to see.

While Alexander has decent size for the position, he will likely struggle with the bigger more physical power forwards at the NBA level.

There is also the issue of Alexander being suspended for the end of his freshman season at Kansas, reportedly due to his mother receiving impermissable benefits. Teams will surely need to do their due diligence on this issue.

NBA Player Comparison
Alexander has some similarities to Thomas Robinson in that he is a physical, slightly undersized big man with a great motor. He will likely make his mark on the defensive end well before his offense develops.

In due time Alexander could be a very good rotation player as every team could use an athletic big man who controls the boards. He started his basketball career later than most so he still has plenty of room for growth.
