2015 Draft Profile - Emmanuel Mudiay

Strengths
An impressive physical specimen with top-notch athleticism, Emmanuel Mudiay stands as the best point guard prospect in the draft. Possessing great height for the position at 6’5, Mudiay is a bull with the basketball, excelling at penetrating and finishing in the paint.

Mudiay thrives in transition and once he gets some momentum he becomes very difficult to stop. He is also very solid in the pick-and-roll game, showing good feel on when to attack, shoot, and pass depending on the situation. He can make every pass and knows how to change speeds and direction very well.

His size and athleticism also allow him to be a very good rebounder from the point guard spot. Defensively he has all the physical tools necessary to thrive on that end of the floor. He has good lateral quickness and length and his hand speed allows him to come up with a solid number of steals.

Weaknesses
Mudiay’s biggest weakness is likely his perimeter shooting. He is shooting a decent enough 54 percent from inside the three-point line, but that is mostly due to his ability to finish at the rim.

He is only 30 percent from deep, and even more concerning is his 58.1 percent mark from the free throw line. That will have to be fixed if the ball is in his hands at the NBA level and improving his range will only make him more dangerous offensively.

Mudiay also averages 3.1 turnovers which could definitely stand to be lowered. He has a high motor most nights, but there are times when he can lose focus and his play, especially on defense, suffers because of it.

NBA Player Comparison
Mudiay is similar to a young John Wall. His physical tools are immense, especially his speed from end to end, and his ability to finish at the rim. Much like Wall, Mudiay’s jumper leaves a lot to be desired, but can improve with time.

He probably won’t be as pure of a point as Wall, but his athleticism will allow him to make plays until the rest of his game catches up. If Mudiay realizes his potential, he will be an All-Star for years to come.
