2015 Draft Profile - Jonathan Holmes

Strengths¬¬
At 6’9”, Holmes is one of the most versatile prospects this draft has to offer. Along with his size, he also has a 7’0” wingspan that allows him to guard multiple positions on the floor. He’s a solid de-fender both on the perimeter and in the post. Holmes also uses his wingspan to excel on the boards and chal-lenge shots. Holmes brings a good motor and a high basketball IQ to his game.

Offensively, Holmes could do a little bit of everything a well. Over his career at Texas, he developed an above the average perimeter game with range out to the three-point line. He can also take advantages of mismatches and play down low in the post. Holmes was more than capable of finishing through contact and didn’t mind being the go-to-guy for the Longhorns. Holmes can consistently hit mid-range jumpers spotting up but needs to work on it off-the-dribble. When the ball is in his hands, he keeps his head up and is always looking to make the smart play.

Weaknesses
Although Holmes is a “do it all” type of player, he doesn’t really excel at any one thing. As mentioned, Holmes has a solid perimeter game but needs to work on being able to create his own shots. He also seems to be tentative on some of his shot selections and avoids contact when attacking the paint - which causes awkward shots and bad looks. Holmes struggles when being guarded by big-ger/stronger defenders and settles for bad shots. He will also need to improve his efficiency as he shot under 40 percent this past season after shooting 50 percent his junior year.

Defensively, Holmes is solid but needs to work on staying with his man coming down the floor. Numerous times he would run down to the hoop when his man would be on the perimeter - That wont sit well with head coaches in the NBA. All in all, Holmes would be a good piece for a team needing a player off the bench that could help on both ends of the floor. He’s versatile and a good all-around player.
