2015 Draft Profile - Joseph Young

Strengths
Young, winner of the Pac-12 Player of the Year award, is an explosive scorer that finds multiple ways to get the ball into the basket. To start off, he is very quick with the ball which allows him to take on just about anyone off-the-dribble. Being listed as a shooting guard despite being undersized, Young is a solid finisher at the rim. He uses his explosiveness and quickness to get past defenders and into the lane to finish or kick out to open shooters.

His ball-handling skills also contribute to his ability to shoot off-the-dribble, a big part of Young's offensive repertoire. He is a good shooter in general, but can also create his own shot and can hit from three. Young has deep range and is an efficient scorer coming off high screens. NBA coaches will love the fact that he shoots over ninety percent from the free-throw line.

A big improvement in Young's game this past year at Oregon was his court vision. Young doubled his assist average in his final season and made a concerted effort to set up teammates as his team's primary ball-handler. This is important for Young who most likely will be turned into a PG in the NBA.

Weaknesses
As mentioned, Young is still listed as a shooting guard being only 6'3. As we all know, NBA point guards are getting bigger and more athletic, causing a concern for undersized guards like Young. Not only is his height a concern, but he weighs only 185 pounds which leads many to believe he'll be pushed around by bigger guards on defense.

As explosive as he is on offense, Young can also be a very streaky shooter and his shot selection leaves a lot to be desired at times. He misses wide-open players at times to shoot bad shots even when he's struggling to score.

He's one of the best scorers this draft class has to offer but his size and ability to transition into more of a point guard will be the question heading into the NBA draft.
