2015 Draft Profile - Montrezl Harrell

Strengths
Harrell is a true power forward with excellent physical tools, outstanding athleticism, and a non-stop motor that allows him to excel despite being slightly undersized for the position. He is an excellent rebounder and is really strong on the offensive glass where he averages more than three per game this season.

He is capable of getting baskets on the block and with some decent post moves and can finish through contact. He has consistently worked to improve his outside game developing range out to the college three-point line. Arguably his best offensive attribute is the ability to get out in transition and finish with authority.

Defensively he never stops, using his strength and physicality to contain players on the block. His length allows him to challenge shots at the rim and he has solid lateral mobility so he can chase ball handlers on a pick and roll.

Weaknesses
Harrell is more of an energy player at this point and still needs to add some polish, especially on the offensive end. He could stand to develop a couple of reliable post moves and his jumper is far from reliable.

Defensively he gives effort at all times, but his discipline lacks occasionally. He can get too far out of position or chase blocks which leads to easy baskets.

His ceiling doesn’t seem to be as high as other prospects and its curious as to whether he will be much better than what he is right now.

NBA Player Comparison
Rebounding is something that always translates well to the NBA and Harrell can definitely do that. If he can really develop his offensive game he could be similar to Elton Brand, though he is not that polished.

A more reasonable expectation would be someone like J.J. Hickson or Brandon Bass, an undersized big who relies on physicality and athleticism to be effective. Harrell likely won’t be a star in the NBA, but he translates as the type of guy everyone wants on their team.
