Position: PG/SG
Team: Boston College
Class: Junior

2015 Draft Profile - Oliver Hanlan

Strengths:

Olivier Hanlan comes in as an undersized shooting guard that can score in multiple ways on offense. He has great shooting range from the perimeter but can also put the ball on the floor to score. He is excellent at changing speeds to get around defenders and works well on the pick-and-roll, using screens effectively to get to his spots on the floor.

He also uses screens effectively off-the-ball and showed himself to be very good on catch-and-shoot situations, a major positive considering he won't have the ball in his hands as much in the NBA as he did in college. When he gets to the rim he is a great finisher, having one of the highest percentages at the rim amongst players in this class.

Hanlan isn't strictly a scorer as he has good court vision and passing abilities. He knows when to look for his own shot and when to hit teammates for open looks, but at Boston College he had less than stellar teammates which explains his average assist numbers.

Weaknesses
Hanlan lacks the size of a normal shooting guard and when coupled with less than elite athleticism, it brings questions as to what position he will play in the NBA.

Those two weaknesses are especially glaring on the defensive end. He's fundamentally a poor perimeter defender who sometimes locks in solely on his man. This hurts him as Hanlan struggles fighting through screens and doesn't understand positioning off-the-ball in help defense. Add that to his lack of size and strength and it seems unlikely that Hanlan will be able to defend shooting guards at the next level.

Offensively his lack of speed and athleticism make it difficult for him to create separation with defenders. He is a solid, but not great ball-handler so he doesn't thrive in one-on-one isolation situations without a ball screen and many times is forced to settle for contested mid-range jumpers. Defenses were able to key in on him specifically as he was the main option in college, so by playing more of a complimentary role in the NBA, some of that may be alleviated.

Hanlan definitely has the ability to score at the next level, but he will have to prove to scouts that he can still bring that ability in a complimentary role, and that he can create for others consistently, to really impress.
