Position: SF
Team: Wisconsin

2015 Draft Profile - Sam Dekker

Strengths
Dekker possesses superb size on the wing that gives him versatility on both offense and defense. Because of his 6'9" frame, he's able to adequately guard out on the wing and defend some power forwards effectively in the low post. He's able to be used in different ways not only because of his size, but because of his skill set as well. Dekker can be utilized offensively in multiple areas on the floor. He's a capable shooter from the perimeter that can knock down open threes. He can also put the ball on the floor and attack the basket, plus he can operate from the high and mid-post because of his great footwork and shooting touch inside the paint.

Moving without the basketball is an another aspect of the game that Dekker excels at. Whether it's coming off screens, cutting to the basket or filling lanes in transition, he is fundamentally sound when he doesn't have the basketball in his hands. He has a high basketball IQ and plays with outstanding effort every night -- something coaches love at any level. He should be able to thrive in just about any system because of these traits, combined with his overall unselfishness.

Weaknesses
Although he's capable of hitting open perimeter jumpers, Dekker still needs to improve his consistency in that area. His three point shooting percentage is at a subpar 33.7 and his free throw shooting is at a mere 69.1 percent. He'll need to be more efficient with his shooting outside the paint if he wants to be a major offensive threat in the NBA. Refining his mechanics could help raise those percentages.

His size makes him versatile for Wisconsin, but he may need to add strength if he hopes to occasionally guard power forwards in the post at the next level. Right now he's probably a little too lean and wiry to battle down low with NBA big men. Although he has quality size, his wingspan is a bit disappointing for someone his height. This could cause some limitations to his upside in future years, seeing as it could be difficult for him to finish over bigger and longer defenders while dealing with the opposite on defense.

NBA Player Comparison
Dekker's skill set and measurables are extremely close to those of Chandler Parsons. Both have nearly identical height, weight and wingspans. Parsons came into the league struggling to be consistent with his perimeter jumper, but has improved in that area over the past few years, much like Dekker could. After it was unclear exactly what position Parsons would play coming into the NBA, he has found his niche as a solid defender with a versatile offensive game. They both have some limitations from a skill and physical standpoint, but Dekker could turn into a fantastic role player or glue guy like Parsons currently is for the Dallas Mavericks. With that being said, neither will likely ever be good enough to be the driving force of a playoff team.
