Tyus Jones
Ht/Wt: 6' 1" / 184 lbs
Position: PG
Team: Duke
Class: Freshman

2015 Draft Profile - Tyus Jones

Strengths
There probably isn’t a more pure point guard in the country than Tyus Jones. He is extremely poised under pressure, has excellent basketball IQ, and outstanding court vision, especially for a freshman.

He has done a great job at Duke of keeping everyone involved, and seems to have a feel of when he should look to score for himself, and when to set teammates up. He is also at his best in big games, never backing down from the bright lights.

While he isn’t a top-flight athlete, he is quick with a very good first step. He has a good understanding of changing speed and directions that allows him to get to the rim despite his lack of elite speed and athleticism. His shooting has also improved this season.

Weaknesses
Jones’ skill set is that of a true point guard, unfortunately his physical attributes are from elite. With so many of today’s top point guards being physical specimens, Jones doesn’t have the size, speed, and leaping ability of many of the NBA’s best.

This also hurts him defensively as it is unclear whether he will be able to keep the likes of John Wall, Russell Westbrook, and Stephen Curry in front of him on a regular basis.

He also will need to continue to improve his jumper. While it is getting better it needs to get more consistent and with it being unclear how effective he will be at the basket, his jumper will be very important going forward.

Player Comparison
He will draw a lot of comparisons to Tyler Ennis as both were poised freshman point guards whose skill set is far above their athletic tools. That is a legitimate comparison on the low end, but best case scenario I think is Mike Conley.

Jones has an excellent understanding of the position and while he won’t be a main option, will be great at keeping all of his teammates happy. As a late-first rounder, Jones could wind up being the steal of the draft.
