2016 Draft Profile - AJ Hammons
Strengths: Standing at 7’0” and weighing approximately 280 pounds, A.J. Hammons has the big, physical presence that NBA teams are looking for when drafting a prototypical sized center.Besides being of great stature, Hammons is actually more mobile and athletic than many scouts expected him to be. He’s a very good shot blocker and rebounder (averaged 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 block per game this past season), but the rest of his game is still a work of progress.
The talent is clearly there for Hammons, but like most big men, the development process is taking much longer than teams would prefer. Now it’s just a matter of who’s going to take a chance on a soon-to-be 23-year-old when training camp starts.
Weaknesses: Although the talent is clearly there for Hammons, he’s about to turn 23 years old which draws questions as to how much room he has to grow.
He’s also struggled mightily throughout his college career with conditioning issues, as he isn’t known for a player that can play long stretches of time during a game. It was something that the Purdue program tried to work on when Hammons was there, but it wasn’t enough to help his draft stock.
Besides being very talented, Hammons is still very raw overall, which is surprising seeing how he’s one of the oldest of his draft class. If Hammons doesn’t hear his name called on June 23, expect a team to immediately pick him up on undrafted waivers and work with him during Summer League. If a team is patient with the 7’0” center, they may be getting a quality frontcourt player in the next few years.
