Denzel Valentine
Ht/Wt: 6' 5" / 220 lbs
Position: SG/SF
Team: Michigan St.
Class: Senior

2016 Draft Profile - Denzel Valentine

Strengths: Denzel Valentine will be another case of college productivity versus prototypical NBA physical tools. Valentine may lack elite size and athleticism, but he is one of the most complete players in the country.

Valentine can do a little bit of everything. He is a great shooter with deep range. He is a good ball handler and willing passer with a high basketball IQ who always looks to make the right play. He has great footwork, understands how to change speeds, and has multiple ways to finish when he gets in the paint.

As with most Tom Izzo players he is an absolute hound on defense, who will lockdown on that end of the floor and plays hard at all times. He is also an excellent rebounder who fights hard on the glass.

Weaknesses: Most of the concerns with Valentine have to do with his physical limitations.

He isn’t the quickest player and his first step is relatively average. This leads to him struggling to get by players in the paint and having to take challenged floaters and mid-range jumpers.

Defensively, he guards small forwards in college as he lacks the lateral quickness to stick with quicker guards. His lack of prototypical NBA small forward size will bring questions as to which position he can guard at the next level.
