2016 Draft Profile - Deyonta Davis
Strengths: Deyonta Davis is on the verge of becoming only the second one-and-done player in Tom Izzo's coaching career at Michigan State if he does ultimately decide to declare for the draft. The other player? Zach Randolph. Not a bad name to be compared with. What makes the 6'10" power forward a potential lottery pick is his overall upside.Davis is a long, athletic big man that can get the job done inside and out. He's an excellent rebounder and shot-blocker, that uses both his length and athleticism to alter shots even when he's not blocking them.
He also has the ability offensively to step out and hit the midrange jumper, which has impressed many scouts seeing how limited his role has been offensively at Michigan State.
Weaknesses: Although he indeed possesses lottery pick potential, Davis still needs to fix many minor details to succeed at the next level. First off, he needs to add strength to be able to matchup with NBA forwards and centers. At 6'10" it wouldn't surprise me if a team decided to go small and slide him over to the center position.
With that said, Davis also needs to polish his offensive game in the paint more. He has the ability to score, even when he stretches out to about 17 feet, but his footwork and overall repertoire need to improve as he gets more touches inside.
At times he also plays too passively in the low block, which won't suit well against the NBA's best rim protectors. And although he's great defensively, many have criticized how tentative he is when coming off ball screens. In a league where forwards have to help, hedge, and recover all in a matter of seconds, timing and consistency goes a long way.
