2016 Draft Profile - Domantas Sabonis

Strengths: Sabonis is more of a throwback big man who is big, physical, and plays with a great motor at all times. He likely won’t be a star in the NBA, but he can be an excellent role player thanks to his array of skills.

He is an excellent rebounder, both offensively and defensively. He keeps many plays alive because of his activity on the offensive glass and much of his offense comes from putbacks and dump-offs on pick-and-rolls. He is great in that situation as he is an excellent screen setter and dives hard to the rim.

Defensively, his physicality makes him tough to move on the low block, but he also possesses excellent mobility for his size that allows him to guard on the perimeter as well.

Sabonis is a smart player with a high basketball IQ who never takes plays off. He is the type of player who will find a role anywhere.

Weaknesses: Sabonis has the size and strength of a power forward, but his athleticism and length is very average. It hurts him defensively as some bigs can shoot over him while on offense he struggles to finish down low over long, athletic players.

His perimeter game also leaves a lot to be desired at this stage. He is not confident as a perimeter shooter, which puts him in less than favorable positions when he receives the ball at the 15-foot range.

Combining his struggles to finish against length with his less than average perimeter shooting makes it hard to see Sabonis being a consistent offensive threat in the half-court. He will have to prove he can be more effective to really raise his stock.
