2016 Draft Profile - Jakob Peltl
Strengths: Many were surprised that Jakob Poeltl decided to return to Utah after an impressive freshman season. In his sophomore season, he will have to show growth and build on the potential he showed last year.Poeltl’s strengths remain the same. He is outstanding on defense, possessing great quickness and athleticism for a seven-footer. He is a top-notch shot blocker from the weakside, but is also a great on-ball defender in the post. He is a beast on the boards, especially the offensive glass and has all the makings of an elite defender.
Offensively he has good touch around the rim and can turn over both shoulders. He has a developing mid-range game and is a great option for the pick-and-roll. He has a high basketball IQ and has shown the ability to read the defense and make good plays with his passing.
Weaknesses: Poeltl still needs to get stronger on the block. While he is willing to battle on the post with anyone, he can still be pushed around by stronger post players. He is also relatively foul prone and will have to improve that so he can stay on the floor.
His offensive post game could still use some work as he doesn’t have many moves or a go-to move at this stage. He also struggles to score over length and has had issues against some NBA-size defenders that he has dealt with. Like many big men, his free throw percentage is abysmal and he must improve that.
He must do a better job of dealing with pressure as he has shown a penchant to turn the ball over with bad passes when someone gets in his face on defense.
