2016 Draft Profile - Malachi Richardson

Strengths : Malachi Richardson’s stock really blew up during the NCAA Tournament when he led Syracuse to an unexpected Final Four appearance. As it stands, he is one of the better all-around wings in this draft class.

Physically, Richardson has ideal size for an NBA wing, with outstanding length and a frame that should fill out as he gets older. Offensively, he is one of the best players in this class at creating shots for himself with a variety of moves at his disposal.

He is a streaky shooter, but shows good form in catch-and-shoot situations and excels at attacking the basket off the dribble. He also has good potential defensively as he moves his feet well, and his length allows him to challenge shots and get in the passing lanes regularly.

Weaknesses : Richardson’s shooting percentages were not great at Syracuse and a lot of that has to do with his shot selection. He shot a lot of contested jumpers that sometimes went in and sometimes didn’t and when he was off, he was very capable of shooting his team out of games.

He also struggled to finish through contact in the paint, which was due to a combination of said shot selection and a lack of elite athleticism. Most of his game was predicated on isolations and while he has plenty of moves, it didn’t always lead to a good shot

He will also need to improve his effort on defense as he was not always consistent on that end, though that is not uncommon for a player of his age.
